John Griffin majored in Computer Science in college in the 1960s because he had an interest in artificial intelligence and wanted to help create a household robot. That task turned out to be much harder than anticipated and he never did find work in that area. However, he did spend his career writing software and designing computer chips in the area south of San Francisco known as Silicon Valley. Since his retirement, major advances have occurred in the field of artificial intelligence, and John has spent time thinking about how society should handle the unemployment that will result from increased automation and intelligent machines and how universal basic income could be a possible solution.
